Is CBD regulated in the UK?
For too long, the CBD market was very poorly regulated. The market was full of low quality and unsafe products, leaving the public struggling to find trustworthy and safe CBD oil. Last year, the UK set out regulations, which companies now need to adhere to in order to produce and sell CBD.
Companies in the UK must submit a Novel Foods dossier to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) by March 2021. More importantly, they must be approved, otherwise, they will be removed from the market.
But, what does that mean?
To break it down, a “Novel Food” is a food that has not been consumed to a significant degree before 15 May 1997. The dossier needs to provide proof that the product, (a) poses no risk to public health, (b) is not nutritionally inferior when replacing a similar food, and (c) is not misleading the consumer.
This means that existing CBD companies will need to apply and prove the safety of their CBD. Once submitted, their dossier will be reviewed for scientific data backing. The application process is not easy, but it is important that every customer can understand what their product contains and the safety of the product they are choosing to ingest.

These rules will prevent companies from trying to side-step legalities, with the knowledge that those actions could have serious consequences. After March 20201, authorities will crack down on companies not following the rules and will remove unapproved products from shelves.
This means that many companies won’t survive. However, these long-awaited standards are a very positive change for the safety of consumers.
